Cleavage view

Last revised by Andrew Murphy on 23 Mar 2023

A cleavage view (also called "valley view") is a mammogram view that depicts the posteromedial portion of both breasts (the “valley” between the two breasts) by placing them on the cassette at the same time and pulling them anteriorly.

Manual technical factors should be used.

A cleavage view may be performed when some of the breast being imaged may get pulled or left out due to the opposite breast left out of the compression field, or when a finding in the mediolateral-oblique view cannot be found on the cranial-caudal view. It can be useful even to avoid the “mosaic technique” reducing the dose when mammography of big breasts must be performed with a standard size (18 x 24) Bucky.
