Computer vision

Last revised by Daniel J Bell on 6 Mar 2020

Computer vision is a field concerned with the creation of generalized automated computer insight into visual data i.e. making computers see. Although often understood as a field within computer science, the field actually involves work in informatics, various fields of engineering and neuroscience. Historically computer vision grew out of the budding field of artificial intelligence in the early days taking much inspiration from the human nervous system and human visual system. Although researchers have investigated computer vision in radiology for many decades, more recently deep learning has made the field more practically relevant in both radiology and pathology.
