Dorsal talonavicular ligament

The dorsal talonavicular ligament is one of the three stabilizers of the talonavicular joint and therefore a stabilizer of the midtarsal (Chopart) joint.

Gross anatomy

The dorsal talonavicular ligament extends from the mid-talar neck to the navicular bone and merges with the joint capsule medially and laterally ^1,2.

Attachments

The dorsal talonavicular ligament originates at the dorsal aspect talar neck and inserts at the dorsal surface of the navicular bone ³.

Radiographic features

Ultrasound

On ultrasound, the dorsal talonavicular can be best pictured longitudinally with the probe positioned on the superolateral midfoot ³.

MRI

The dorsal talonavicular ligament is consistently pictured on sagittal images and often outlined by joint fluid or fat and thickened.
