Dorsal talonavicular ligament

Last revised by Andrew Murphy on 15 Jan 2024

The dorsal talonavicular ligament is one of the three stabilizers of the talonavicular joint and therefore a stabilizer of the midtarsal (Chopart) joint.

The dorsal talonavicular ligament extends from the mid-talar neck to the navicular bone and merges with the joint capsule medially and laterally 1,2.

The dorsal talonavicular ligament originates at the dorsal aspect talar neck and inserts at the dorsal surface of the navicular bone 3.

On ultrasound, the dorsal talonavicular can be best pictured longitudinally with the probe positioned on the superolateral midfoot 3.

The dorsal talonavicular ligament is consistently pictured on sagittal images and often outlined by joint fluid or fat and thickened.
