Extensive intraductal component (invasive ductal carcinoma)

Last revised by Daniel J Bell on 20 Feb 2018

Extensive intraductal component (EIC) in breast imaging evaluation is the pathological description where an invasive ductal carcinoma has a prominent intraductal component within it or if there is intraductal carcinoma, DCIS is present within sections of normal adjacent tissue. It is sometimes classified as tumors having DCIS occupying >25% of the area comprising the infiltration cancer and the presence of DCIS beyond the edge of the infiltrating cancer.

Epidemiology

Tumors with EIC tends to be comparatively commoner in younger patients.

Treatment and prognosis

The presence of EIC is an often a significant factor in predicting local recurrence after breast-conserving surgery and radiotherapy. Tumors with EIC can have a recurrence rate of ~25% compared with 5-8% in tumors without EIC.
