The eyebrows may refer either to:
- horizontal ridge where the forehead meets the superior eyelid consisting of the five layers of the scalp, i.e. skin, subcutaneous soft tissue, intertwined fibres of the orbicularis oculi and occipitofrontalis muscles, areolar layer and lastly the pericranium of the frontal bone.
- specifically the hairs growing on this ridge (a.k.a. supercilia in TA)
Dissectional and surgical studies have demonstrated differences in eyebrow anatomy between men and women 3.
Function
The eyebrows were once thought to primarily act as barriers to halt the dripping of sweat into the eyes during exercise. However it is now thought that their role in conveying various facial expressions is their most important function.
