F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) embolism

Last revised by Arlene Campos on 12 Jan 2024

F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) embolism is a condition which results in a uniform intense FDG-avid pulmonary focus without any underlying structural CT correlate with an unremarkable follow-up PET-CT scan 1. It is thought to occur as a result of clumping of FDG with blood when the blood is withdrawn in an FDG-loaded syringe to confirm its position in the vein. Subsequently, the FDG labeled clot is pushed as an embolus. It is, therefore, recommended to use a preplaced IV cannula for injecting FDG 2,3.
