The differential of a fat containing solitary pulmonary nodule is very narrow. The presence of fat within a nodule, indicated by a measured density between -30 and -150 HU, is a reliable sign of benignity 1,3.
In a well circumscribed smooth or lobulated mass (especially if it has been largely stable in size over time) presence of fat is essentially pathognomonic of a pulmonary hamartoma, and usually, no further assessment is required.
