The Final FRCR Part B viva (colloquially known as the Part 2B viva) is one of the three components of the part B of the Final FRCR examination. Part B is the final of three parts. Passing the FRCR exam is required by the Royal College of Radiologists (RCR) to complete training in clinical radiology in the UK.
It by far the most worried-about exam and comprises an hour long viva split into two sections of 30 minutes each. Each viva is taken with 2 examiners who each present cases for 15 minutes.
Since 2014, the viva component has been delivered using the OsiriX platform, and since 2020 has been carried out remotely using Microsoft teams.
The aim of the viva voce examination is to test the candidate's approach to common and important radiology studies. The level required is that of a trainee about to enter higher specialist training, not a subspecialist. The examiners aim to conduct the viva like a clinicoradiological meeting and clinical knowledge will be probed. They will question the candidate on their ability to analyze the images, formulate a sensible differential diagnosis and management plan based on the demographic and clinical data provided. It is a misconception that the greater the number of cases looked at in a viva, the better the candidate's chances. Breadth of knowledge and logical decision making are far more important. Getting the exact diagnosis is not expected, and indeed in some presented cases would not even be possible.
