Fowler-Philip angle

Last revised by Daniel J Bell on 2 Aug 2021

The Fowler-Philip angle is the angle between the inferior calcaneus and the posterior surface of the calcaneus.

Measurement

It is an angle measured on the lateral view of a loaded foot; formed between 2 lines:

  • a line tangential to the posterosuperior border of the calcaneus and the calcaneal tuberosity
  • a line tangential to the inferior border of the calcaneus (longitudinal axis of the calcaneus), i.e. tangent to the calcaneal tubercle and processes of the calcaneal tuberosity (inferiormost point)

Interpretation

Its normal range is between 44° and 69°.

A Fowler-Philip angle of more than 75 degrees is supposedly diagnostic of enlargement of the posterior aspect of the calcaneus, as seen in the Haglund deformity or retrocalcaneal bursitis.
