Gadobutrol (also known as Gadovist/Gadavist) is an extracellular intravenous contrast agent used in magnetic resonance imaging.

  • cyclic, non-ionic molecule 

  • 100% renally excreted

  • T1 relaxivity at 1.5 T: 4.9-5.5 (slightly higher than other extracellular contrast agents)

  • concentration: 1.0 mmol/mL

  • recommended dosage: 0.1 mmol/kg

Of note, gadobutrol's standard concentration (1 mmol/mL) is 2-4 times greater than that of other commercially-available gadolinium chelates, and the smaller injection volume should be considered when planning the timing of the arterial phase in post-contrast dynamic sequences.


As an extracellular contrast agent, gadobutrol can be useful in a wide range of MRI applications, including (but not limited to): hepatic imaging, pelvic imaging, cardiac imaging, brain and spine imaging, and musculoskeletal imaging.
