Gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding refers to hemorrhage into the lumen of the gastrointestinal tract; it is commonly clinically subdivided into whether it occurs into the upper (proximal) or lower (distal) GI tract:
-
upper GI bleeding
- bleeding proximal to the ligament of Treitz, i.e. proximal to the duodenojejunal (DJ) junction
-
lower GI bleeding
- bleeding distal to the ligament of Treitz, i.e. distal to the DJ junction
This bleeding may present as:
- hematemesis: usually upper GI
- per rectal
- hematochezia (fresh blood)
- melena (altered blood)
