Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) (encompasses bone marrow transplantation (BMT)) is a relatively common procedure used to treat a wide spectrum of conditions 1,2:
- lymphoproliferative disorders, e.g. multiple myeloma (most common indication), lymphoma,
- leukemia
- solid tumors, e.g. neuroblastoma, Ewing sarcoma, extragonadal germ cell tumors
- non-malignant disorders, e.g. bone marrow failure syndrome, severe aplastic anemia
There are a number of different types of HSCT 3:
- autologous HSCT: the patient is the donor and recipient of hematopoietic stem cells

allogeneic HSCT: the patient is the recipient of hematopoietic stem cells sourced from another individual
- risk of developing graft versus host disease
Complications
- relapse of primary disease in ~30% 4
- thoracic complications of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation
