Hepatic adrenal rest tumour

Hepatic adrenal rest tumours (HART), previously been termed primary hypernephroma of the liver or hypernephroid carcinoma of the liver, are very rare liver tumours with histology similar to adrenocortical carcinoma. 

Epidemiology

It tends to occur in younger patients and there is no recognised gender predilection.

Pathology

It is considered to be derived from the adrenal rest in the liver. The presence of fat within the tumour is the most characteristic feature.

Radiographic features

While imaging features are non-specific it usually appears as a round, well-defined mass in the liver. There may be a right lobe predilection. Lesions are typically subcapsular and can demonstrate hypervascularity. They often contain foci of calcification.

One specific radiographic feature is the presence of fat within the tumour.
