Human herpesvirus 6 encephalitis

Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) encephalitis is a rare CNS infection due the virus reactivation in immunosuppressed patients, especially in those following a hematopoietic cell transplant who develop a characteristic limbic encephalitis syndrome with MRI signal intensity abnormalities of the mesial temporal lobe 1

Studies have been conducted to investigate possible associations of HHV-6 with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (mesial temporal sclerosis) 2 and multiple sclerosis 1,3.
