Hutson loop

Last revised by Brian Gilcrease-Garcia on 3 Nov 2019

A Hutson loop, also known as an access loop, is variation of the Roux-en-Y choledochojejunostomy whereby a longer segment of jejunum is used to construct the hepatobiliary limb, and the upstream end is tacked to the anterior abdominal wall ("stomatization") 4.

The goal is to simplify future endoscopic access to the choledochojejunostomy by way of percutaneous access through the abdominal wall. It may be used in the setting of anticipated post-operative perianastomic stricturing (i.e. sclerosing cholangitis) or recurrent hepatolithiasis.

History and etymology

The technique was first described by Duane Hutson in 1984 in the management of sclerosing cholangitis with recurrent stricturing 4.
