Hydrolyzed reduced technetium-99m

Hydrolyzed reduced technetium-99m (HR-Tc-99m) is a secondary product of the radiolabeling process. It is the chemical species of reduced technetium-99m; oxidation states: +5 and +4. It represents one of the possible impurities present in the technetium agents. It does not bind to the carrier molecule, for example MDP, HMPAO, etc.

The hydrolyzed technetium tends to complex with tin and oxygen, forming insoluble colloidal contaminant compounds (Tc-Sn and TcO2), reducing the radiochemical purity of the radiopharmaceutical.

Quality controls

To know the percentage of HR-Tc-99m present in the radiopharmaceutical and therefore its radiochemical purity, it is possible to use chromatographic techniques: HPLC (high performance liquid chromatography), ITLC (istant thin layer chromatography), etc.
