Hyperdense pulmonary nodules

Last revised by Yahya Baba on 2 Apr 2020

Hyperdense pulmonary nodules are a subset of pulmonary nodules that have relatively increased attenuation, usually caused by calcification within the nodule. Here, we broadly refer to a nodule as a pulmonary opacity <30 mm.

Differential diagnosis

  1. calcified pulmonary nodules are a specific group of hyperdense nodules and finding calcification in a nodule significantly narrows the differential.
  2. non-calcified hyperdense pulmonary nodules are predominantly the result of inhalational exposure to substances, although embolization of material may cause dense nodular opacification within the lung.
