Images (multiple choice questions)

Last revised by Derek Smith on 05 Jul 2021

Images are an optional part of multiple multiple choice questions (MCQ) but necessary to the image interpretation type questions.

Using images from existing cases

Adding an existing image which is part of a case to a MCQ is easy.

First, find the image you want to use by browsing Radiopaedia and pin it.

Once the image is pinned, click the "Add an image" button in the MCQ edit screen, click into the "My pinned images" tab and select the image.

Attribution should be included at the very end of the explanation section of the question using the following format:

Image credit: [user name] rID: [xxx], any other relevant info

For example:

  • Image credit: John Smith rID: 12345
  • Image credit: Mary Blogs rID: 12345, annotated by Jarred May
  • Image credit: Jane Tran https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:someimage.jpg, image in the public domain

Creating bespoke images

Often a bespoke image works best for a question, rather than simply adding one from an existing case. It is essential, however, that images are formatted in a consistent style.

Please download PowerPoint (Windows and macOS) and Keynote (macOS) templates from the following links to help you:

When you have created your image, export it as a JPG and upload it to the multiple-choice question.

If you want to use the image for multiple similar questions, then you can create the first question, save it, and then duplicate it using the "duplicate question" option in the top-right cog menu.
