Infective enteritis is a common condition although, routinely, does not require imaging.
Clinical pathology
Patients can present with fevers, colicky abdominal pain, diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting 2,3.
Pathology
There are numerous organisms that can cause infective enteritis with classically associated small bowel locations 1:
- proximal small bowel: Giardia and Strongyloides species
- distal small bowel: Salmonella, Shigella, Yersinia species
- distal ileum (and caecum): tuberculosis, typhlitis, amebiasis
Differential diagnosis
Consider other causes of enteritis.
