Intraparotid nodal metastases

Last revised by David Luong on 5 Feb 2022

Intraparotid nodal metastases refer to metastatic involvement of intraparotid lymph nodes from either a primary parotid tumour or an extraparotid tumour in the head and neck (e.g. nasopharyngeal carcinoma).

Pathology

Location

There may be a predilection towards the superficial lobe or tail region of the parotid 3.

Treatment and prognosis

  • the presence of intraparotid metastatic nodal involvement in those with a known head and neck skin squamous cell carcinoma might imply occult cervical nodal involvement 2
  • the presence of intraparotid metastatic nodal involvement in those with a known primary parotid cancer can be strongly associated with a worse disease-specific survival and a higher risk of locoregional recurrence 4
