Isolated cleft palate

Last revised by Arlene Campos on 12 Feb 2024

An isolated cleft palate is a type of facial cleft. This is a much rarer occurrence than a cleft lip +/- palate and is thought to represent a different pathological entity.

The estimated incidence is at ~1 per 2000-2500 pregnancies 4-5. There may be a slight female predilection 4

The cleft can involve either the soft or hard palate and may extend as far as the nasopalatine foramen but there is no accompanying cleft lip.

  • lamotrigine exposure during pregnancy: possible 6

An isolated cleft palate only rarely identified prenatally. An "absent equals sign" has been proposed as a novel marker where a normal uvula could be visualized with a typical echo pattern (the 'equals sign') in normal cases 7.
