Jugular bulb diverticulum refers to a protrusion of the jugular bulb with waist-like margin, which can occur with or without jugular bulb dehiscence.
The prevalence on imaging series ranges 1-8% 1,2.
Many patients are asymptomatic, but jugular bulb diverticulum has been described in association with pulsatile tinnitus, conductive hearing loss, and vertigo 1,3.
The outpouching is most directly demonstrated on MR or CT venography. Smooth remodeling of the jugular foramen or adjacent structures of the temporal bone on non-contrast-enhanced CT can suggest the diagnosis.
Treatment and prognosis
Open surgical treatment involves mastoidectomy and packing of bone wax to compress the diverticulum 4. Endovascular treatment involves stenting of the jugular bulb and coil embolization of the diverticulum 5.
