The jugular bulb is the connection between the sigmoid sinus and the internal jugular vein.
Gross anatomy
The sigmoid and inferior petrosal sinuses empty into the jugular bulb, which continues as the internal jugular vein. It lies in the pars vascularis, which occupies the posterolateral aspect of the jugular foramen.
Relations
- superiorly: external auditory canal, middle ear, posterior semicircular canal, vestibule, internal auditory canal
- anteriorly: internal carotid artery, cochlear aqueduct, inferior petrosal sinus, meningeal branch of the ascending pharyngeal artery, lower cranial nerves, posterior meningeal artery
- posteriorly: sigmoid sinus, occipital bone, facial nerve 1
