Laimer diverticulum

Laimer diverticula occur in the cervical oesophagus in the posterior midline inferior to the cricopharyngeal muscle ^1,2. They are difficult to differentiate from Zenker diverticulum on imaging and endoscopy can be helpful in determining the exact location of the diverticulum ^1-3.

Epidemiology

This is an extremely rare entity, so far seen in a younger population compared to Zenker diverticulum ^1-3.

Radiographic features

Fluoroscopy

A barium swallow study demonstrates an outpouching posterior to the oesophagus in the midline ^1,2.

Differential diagnosis

• Zenker diverticulum: difficult to differentiate on imaging ^1-3
