Lemmel syndrome is defined as obstructive jaundice caused by a periampullary duodenal diverticulum compressing the intrapancreatic common bile duct with resultant bile duct dilatation.
Patients may present with recurrent episodes of jaundice, pancreatitis and/or cholangitis.
Duodenal diverticulum of the second part of duodenum compressing the intrapancreatic part of the common bile duct with resultant upstream dilatation of the extra- and intrahepatic bile ducts.
CT
Focal outpouching of the duodenum adjacent to the papilla (usually second part of the duodenum) causing compression of the common bile duct.
MRI
MRCP
Focal outpouching of the duodenum adjacent to the papilla (usually second part of the duodenum) causing compression of the common bile duct.
History and etymology
It was initially described by the German physician, Gerhard Lemmel (1902-1987) in 1934 5,6.
