Liposuction

Last revised by Daniel J Bell on 22 Jun 2022

Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure to reduce the volume of adipose tissue in the neck, arms, legs and/or abdomen. Areolar fat, a deeper layer of adipose tissue, is the main target and shows a good response to vacuum-assisted liposuction.

There are three types of this procedure 1,2:

  • power-assisted liposuction: cannula with a small motor connected that makes the cannula move to and fro smoothening the procedure
  • ultrasound-assisted liposuction: ultrasound-guided cannula that breaks fatty tissue, later on, aspirated by same standard cannula
  • laser-assisted liposuction: uses a laser-equipped cannula that breaks down adipose tissue more effectively, later on, suck by a power-assisted cannula

A few of the indications of the procedure include 1:

  • BMI within 30% of "normal" patients
  • minimal to moderately surplus adipose tissue with mildly lax skin
  • six to twelve months stable weight of the patient
