Lower vaginal atresia is a type of vaginal atresia where the lower third of the vagina fails to develop.
Patients may present with primary amenorrhea with progressive cyclical abdominal pain.
It is usually not considered a type of Mullerian duct anomaly. It occurs from a failure of recanalization of the urogenital sinus.
Imaging may show a hydrometrocolpos or hematometrocolpos due to obstruction, although the upper vagina may distend more than the uterine cavity.
