Male infertility

Last revised by Henry Knipe on 1 Sep 2021

Male infertility is the inability to conceive due to factors in the male partner.

Precise numbers vary but generally, male factor is estimated to play a role in up to half of infertility cases 3

Causes of male infertility can be considered as:

  • pre-testicular, e.g. hormonal, genetic
  • testicular
  • post-testicular, e.g. obstruction

Radiographic features

Although sperm analysis is the primary investigation for this problem, radiological examinations can in some cases reveal the etiology. Ultrasound is the most commonly performed radiological exam for male infertility, but MRI may be used in some cases.
