It may be prevalent in 10-30% of the general population.
Associations
- disease progression in cystic fibrosis 1
- severe disease in those with bronchiectasis without underlying cystic fibrosis
- more severe progression in those with spondyloarthropathies such as ankylosing spondylitis 3
Pathology
Affected individuals have low levels of an immune protein named mannose-binding lectin in their blood. They are prone to recurrent infections, including infections of the upper respiratory tract and other body systems.
