Megaesophagus or diffuse esophageal dilatation can be caused by a variety of conditions.
Pathology
Etiology
Some of the more common causes are given below 1-3:
- esophageal dysmotility
- distal obstruction
- malignant stricture, e.g. esophageal cancer, cancer of the gastric cardia
- benign stricture, e.g. peptic stricture
- extrinsic compression, e.g. lymphadenopathy, gastric band
