Mesorectal lymph nodes refers to lymph nodes that are present in the mesorectal fascia. Their assessment is important in the staging of colorectal tumors such as rectal cancer and anal cancer.
Distribution
According to one study, the majority of nodes were located in the proximal two-thirds of the posterior rectal mesentery 1.
Practical points
They may be characterized on staging MRI scans with ultrasmall particles of iron oxide (USPIO) and T2*-weighted MR imaging 2.
- uniform and central low-signal intensity patterns are features of nonmalignant nodes
- reactive nodes frequently show central low signal intensity at T2*-weighted imaging
