Microgastria

Last revised by Rohit Sharma on 9 Jun 2023

Microgastria is a rare congenital condition involving an abnormally small stomach. It is typically associated with other congenital conditions such as asplenia, congenital heart disease, skeletal anomalies or tracheoesophageal anomalies.

Microgastria is an extremely rare anomaly, approximately less than 100 cases have been reported (c. 2019) 1,2. Isolated microgastria is suspected to occur in only 4% of patients, with most patients having other concomitant congenital abnormalities (e.g. microgastria-limb reduction complex) 2.

Most patients have postprandial vomiting, recurrent aspiration pneumonia, and growth impairment due to poor nutrition.

There is no established definitive management, with case reports suggesting the use of Hunt-Lawrence jejunal pouch for gastric augmentation, however, the evidence is sparse 2.
