Mitral valve leaflet calcification

Mitral valve leaflet calcification or mitral leaflet calcification refers to the deposition of calcium on the mitral valvular leaflets as opposed to mitral annular calcification in the mitral annulus. It has been associated with mitral stenosis 1,2. 

Mitral leaflet calcification has been reported mainly in older patients 1. It is often associated with mitral annular calcification.

Mitral leaflet calcification is typically hyperechoic and associated with leaflet thickening 1,3.

The detection of mitral leaflet calcification should prompt subsequent echocardiography for evaluation of the mitral valve 1.

The radiological report should include a description of the following features:
