Muscular attachments of the hyoid bone (mnemonic)

Last revised by Wilson Tao on 14 Mar 2025

A handy mnemonic to recall the muscle attachments of the hyoid bone. The first sentence is for six muscles attaching superiorly, the second sentence is for three muscles attaching inferiorly. Both sentences are in order from lateral to medial:

  • Christopher, He Didn't See Girls Much. That's Obvious, Stupid.

Mnemonic

Another mnemonic separates the muscles based on their attachment to either the greater horn or the body:

Greater horn: Swallowing Moves Hyoid

  • Stylohyoid

  • Middle Constrictor

  • Hyoglossus

Body: Great Meals Descend Smoothly Over The Gullet

  • Geniohyoid

  • Mylohyoid

  • Digastric (anterior belly)

  • Sternohyoid

  • Omohyoid

  • Thyrohyoid

  • Genioglossus

Lesser horn: Chondroglossus muscle and stylohyoid ligament
