Naegele's formula

Last revised by Travis Fahrenhorst-Jones on 14 Mar 2024

The Naegele's formula is simple arithmetic method for calculating the estimated date of delivery of a pregnancy based on the last menstrual period.

To calculate the estimated date of delivery apply the following to the date of the first day of the last menstrual period (e.g. 22nd June 2008):

  • add seven days (i.e 29th)

  • subtract 3 months (i.e March)

  • add one year (i.e 2009)

History and etymology

The formula's eponymous name is derived from German obstetrician Franz Naegele (1778-1851) whom the formula is attributed 2.
