Obturator externus bursa may occur in patients with chronic hip synovitis and raised intra-articular pressure. Distension of the bursa leads to inferior displacement of the obturator externus muscle 1.

The overall prevalence of communication between the hip joint and the obturator externus bursa in the normal population remains unknown, but has been estimated to be less than 5.5% 3.
