Esophageal wall thickening can be observed in a number of situations and can be either focal or diffuse. It may be physiological, and can also be due to benign or malignant disorders.
Pathology
Causes
- diffuse
- diffuse esophageal spasm
- forms of esophagitis
- diffuse esophageal intramural hematoma
- Boerhaave syndrome
- esophageal leiomyomatosis (sometimes can be focal)
- focal
- esophageal mucocele
- esophageal tumors
- part of a hiatus hernia - especially if tubular and incompletely imaged.
