Orbital gyrus

Last revised by Grace Carpenter on 13 Sep 2020

The orbital gyri are located on the inferior surface of the frontal lobe. There are four gyri and they are divided by the H-shaped orbital sulci. They have a role in the perception of odors.

Gross anatomy

The medial orbital gyrus is separated from the gyrus rectus (or straight gyrus) by the olfactory sulcus medially. Laterally lie the anterior and posterior orbital gyri. The olfactory tract lies within the olfactory sulcus.

The anterior and posterior orbital gyri lie anteriorly and posteriorly to the transverse orbital sulcus. They are bounded by the longitudinal orbital sulci medially and laterally.

The lateral orbital gyrus lies lateral to the lateral orbital sulcus 1,3,4.

Blood supply is from the orbitofrontal arteries 5.
