Osteomeniscal impact edema

Last revised by Henry Knipe on 21 Oct 2021

Osteomeniscal impact edema (OMIE) refers to a bone marrow edema pattern in the knee adjacent to a displaced meniscal flap tear.

Patients can present with focal medial knee pain.

This occurs secondary to a displaced meniscal flap tear with peripheral, focal edema in the adjacent bone. It has been described for the medial meniscus 1,2.

A typical finding on MRI is a meniscal flap tear with a displaced meniscal fragment in the meniscotibial or meniscofemoral recess and associated focal and peripherally located edema in the adjacent medial tibial plateau or femoral condyle 1,2.

  • subchondral insufficiency fracture: bone marrow edema in subchondral insufficiency fractures is central and diffuse rather than peripheral and focal as well as having subchondral low T1 signal 2
