Pericardial mesothelioma refers to a mesothelioma arising primarily from the pericardium.
Epidemiology
They are rare and are only thought to account for ~ 0.7% of all malignant mesotheliomas. There is male to female predominance of 2-4 : 1.2.
Pathology
Gross pathology
Pericardial mesothelioma can present as a localized or as a diffuse mass.
Associations
Some reports suggest an association with asbestos exposure but being not as strong as for pleural mesothelioma. Others state no association with asbestos exposure.
Clinical presentation
The presentation of pericardial mesothelioma is nonspecific with complains of dyspnea, chest pain and weight loss.
Complications
- constrictive pericarditis
- pericardial effusion and cardiac tamponade
- heart failure
Prognosis
It is a lethal disease carrying a very poor prognosis. Surgical resection can be option for symptomatic relief.
