POEMS syndrome

POEMS syndrome is an acronym for a rare multisystem disorder comprising of a minimum of three of the following features in the setting of a plasma cell dyscrasia:

  • P: polyneuropathy
  • O: organomegaly
  • E: endocrinopathy
  • M: monoclonal gammopathy
  • S: skin changes (including hyperpigmentation and skin thickening)

POEMS occurs in the setting of plasma cell dyscrasias such as osteosclerotic myeloma, or plasmacytoma. There is an overlap with multicentric Castleman's disease 3.
