Last revised by Henry Knipe on 30 Nov 2017

Post-ablation tubal sterilization syndrome (PATSS) is a recognized delayed complication seen in patients who have undergone both endometrial ablation and tubal sterilization. It has been reported in 6-8% of these patients and occurs when bleeding from residual endometrium is obstructed due to surrounding uterine scarring and tubal occlusion 1.

Cyclic unilateral or bilateral pelvic pain is the common presenting feature 2.

  • often normal as cornual haematometria and hematosalpinx can often be small volume
  • most sensitive and specific imaging modality 4
  • demonstrates blood products in uterine cornu and proximal hematosalpinx
    • bright T1 fat sat signal

Hysterectomy with proximal salpingectomy is definitive treatment 4.
