Proximal radio-ulnar synostosis is an upper limb skeletal malformation characterized by bony fusion at the proximal aspect of the radius and ulna. Of the radio-ulnar synostoses, the proximal third is considered the most common site.

Proximal radioulnar synostoses are rare occurrences especially if they are congenital 1.

Several associated conditions have been described including 3:

Proximal radioulnar synostoses can be congenital or result following trauma. A developmental relationship between posterior dislocation of the radial head and proximal radioulnar fusion has been suggested by some authors.

The proximal radioulnar synostosis was first described by the Dutch anatomist Eduard Sandifort in 1793 5.
