Pseudo-Madelung deformity

Last revised by Mostafa Elfeky on 27 Jul 2024

Pseudo-Madelung deformity refers to increased radial inclination (i.e. ulnar tilt) of the distal radius but with negative ulnar variance and the absence of other typical features of Madelung deformity 1.

Pathology

Pseudo-Madelung deformity can be due to 1-3:

Radiographic features

Pseudo-Madelung deformity is differentiated from Madelung deformity by the absence of 4:

  • positive ulnar variance

  • dorsal subluxation of distal ulna

  • wedging of carpal bones between the radius and ulna

  • dorsal and radial bowing of the radius

  • failure of ossification of ulnar side of the distal radial epiphysis

  • "V-shaped" proximal carpal row
