The pseudoboutonniere deformity is the result of an untreated hyperextension injury of the proximal interphalangeal joint.
It is due to an uncommon avulsion of the volar plate from the proximal phalanx causing a flexion deformity of the PIP joint, while the central slip of the extensor tendon remains intact.
