Pseudocalcifications in the breast

Last revised by Yuranga Weerakkody on 7 Nov 2013

Pseudocalcifications and artifacts in the breast include

  • gold deposits in lymph nodes  from intramuscular gold therapy for rheumatoid arthritis
  • adhesive tape
  • deodorant
  • film-screen artifacts

They should be differentiated from parenchymal calcification. Precautions to be taken are to ask the patient to avoid usage of powder, deodorant or creams on the breast prior to a mammogram and if used should be removed adequately.
