Radiology information system

Last revised by Daniel J Bell on 11 Dec 2018

A radiology information system, also referred to as RIS, is software for patient management in radiology, complementary to PACS. While systems vary and are usually customized for institutions, most systems provide some of the following functions:

  • patient scheduling and list management
  • predefined database searches
  • workflow management

Many radiology information systems may be customized to track any number of issues including patient total radiation dose and allergy information. Typical RIS software includes a desktop or web-based client that provides users with an interface to the backend radiology database, typically stored on a database server.
