RANZCR phase 1 examinations

Last revised by Joshua Yap on 29 Aug 2022

The RANZCR Phase 1 examinations are a set of two written examinations assessing anatomy and applied imaging technology (AIT). They are typically attempted early in the first year of radiology training, and are one of the requirements to progress to Phase 2 of the RANZCR Clinical Radiology Training Program.

The examinations are held twice a year in April and October and are delivered via online proctoring. Results are subsequently released in late June and late November. The examinations can be sat together or independent of each other, however trainees have a maximum of four consecutive opportunities to complete both examinations.

Examinations

Since March 2022 there is a single anatomy examination and a single applied imaging technology examination held over two consecutive days and delivered electronically.

The anatomy examination is a 3 hour examination consisting of:

  • 120 labeling questions (20 questions with 6 labeling items per question, worth 0.25 mark per labeling item)
  • 60 multiple choice questions (best of five possible answers, worth 1 mark per question)
  • 30 very short answer questions (worth 1 mark per question)
  • 20 short answer questions (worth 3 marks per question)

The applied imaging technology examination is a 3 hour examination consisting of:

  • 9 constructed response questions (worth 10 marks per question)
  • 60 multiple choice questions (best of five possible answers, worth 1 mark per question)
Prize

Each year, RANZCR awards the most successful candidate in the Phase 1 examinations the CE Eddy Prize, named in honor of Dr Cecil Eddy, the former director of the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA). The recipient is awarded a cash prize equivalent to the cost of their exam fee and complimentary early bird registration to the RANZCR Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) that year 2.
