Replogle tube

Last revised by Arlene Campos on 22 Jan 2024

A Replogle tube is a medical device used in the treatment of babies with esophageal atresia. The tube is double-lumen and is inserted through the nostril and into the blind-ending esophageal pouch where it is then used to drain the pooled saliva. This prevents the secretions overflowing into the trachea and reduces the risk of aspiration pneumonia 1.

A Replogle tube generally is only used in the preoperative period for hours or days while the baby awaits definitive surgery for esophageal atresia. However, in cases where surgery has to be delayed a Replogle tube may be needed for a longer period.
